Details: QuakeCon 2002 was our first LAN tournament as a team. We competed in the online qualifiers and believing that times set would effect seeds in the tournament, set the 3rd fastest times of any of the qualifying teams. We were qualified for the event. However, the seeds ended up not being based on times.
Unfortunately, mephit and lukin, two of our star players were unable to commit and attend the event with us. We tried to get replacements from in the clan, but on short notice REM was the only replacement we could get. We had to go outside the clan and find a player attending for the Q3 tournament, exodus, to fill our roster. With our seemingly low seed and roster problems we believed it would hurt us at the event, but we showed up and played hard. The lower seed forced us to play the highest seeds in the bracket each round after our first round match win against wSw.
In the second round of the tournament we went up against Swedish clan Infensus who were the number one seed at the event and favored to win it all. The match that ensued would be considered by all that watched one of the greatest matches in RTCW history. We eventually pulled out the win in the 5th round with an explosive display of panzer power from bugzer.
After that it went downhill with our mp_beach strat being compromised without our usual players. Playing it twice in a row, in the winners and losers brackets, we got hit hard by The Doctors who eventually won the tournament, and by Infensus in the losers bracket who were looking for payback.
Although we were out of the running after the two tough losses we finished out strong vs the German Ocrana team with a 3-0 victory on mp_assault. This put us in 5th place and $3,000 richer. |
